A frigid slushwave title, Coldvenice’s latest clues the listener in on what to expect from the second you see the album art. The color palette perfectly matches that of the music. A pouring sheet of icy rain envelopes the whole affair, from the opening track, “失われた魂,” (Lost soul) essentially an eight-minute saxophone solo, all the way through to the conclusion of the album some 15 minutes later. While many slushwave releases have this aquatic edge to them, they rarely come away feeling this cold, this distant. The results are unique and intriguing.

What a ride this album is. Dream Channel’s darker, more ominous side-project delivers a titan of texture and melodicism. Rather handily bouncing back and forth between somber piano tracks and intermittent soundscapes that only be described as the soundtrack to one’s nightmares, the album slays.

Perhaps the only thing more impressive than the emotions this album is able to elicit is the sheer variety of them. We can’t recall a release that’s bounced us from tender sadness (to such a level that it brought tears), directly into the unnatural discomfort of a horrific nightmare without missing a beat.

The 3rd entry in the Satanic Panic series, Vacation Bible School delivers another autumnal feast for the ears. Littered with fear-mongering news snippets playing over ominous, Carpenter-esque soundscapes, Satanic Panic 3 brings the goods.

The album provides a fascinating mixture of more traditionally calming vaporwave, but with the inarticulate, ever-present dread that “Satanism” represents. Much like the previous two entries of Satanic Panic, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more perfect album for this time of year. Pop this on and go watch the leaves change!

With just the right amount of reverb and static interfering with things, you would swear you were watching old footage of a mall. Soulvapor’s most recent release offers their unique spin on mallsoft, that includes a fresh new ingredient: voyeurism.

This release doesn’t put you personally inside of a mall as you meander through the shops but rather plants you in front of a screen watching someone else wander through a mall. The melodies in use are more or less what you’d expect of a mallsoft drop —calming, meandering piano, and crowd chatter. But the new perspective when listening is what really sets this album apart.

The album title and subject matter here sure feel timely, no? With America completely a shambles in some regions, and a certain little pandemic interfering with many facets of life that were once taken for granted, the album doesn’t exactly seem to be honing in on any cause for optimism. Luckily, that’s not the case.

Sure, the initial message may be dour — but underneath that is an album able to shine a light on hidden pockets of optimism. Many of the melodies and sounds harken back to a pre-9/11 corporate America. Back when things were “good.” This pining for what once came before may be pointless to some, but isn’t it just nice to remember a happier time once in a while?
